Strange animals

If you do it on purpose, it often becomes less beautiful than if it happens by accident: creating strange animals. They sometimes seem to come from another planet, or to be a cross between two familiar animals. It is possible to create this 'accident'. I personally note three options:

  • trying to make something else, which failed beautifully
  • provide nonsense text
  • ask for a known fantastic animal

Prachtige mislukking

With this image I tried to get the AI to make a pencil drawing of Cirque du Soleil. Since the DALL-E2 algorithm is generally better at 'simple' assignments, I gave it the assignment "Pencil sketch Cirque du Soleil Epic cinematic brilliant stunning intricate meticulously detailed dramatic atmospheric maximalist digital". DALL-E2 didn't really know what to do, but delivered a half-finished picture with pencil marks. This image was given to Stable v1.5 with the same command and yielded three pencil drawings of acrobats, plus this incredibly beautiful monster. Truly a brilliant accident.

"Peacock butterfly, colourful butterfly, iridescent highlights, aquarel by Hergé, Erin Hanson, Arthur Rackham, Jean Baptiste Monge, cinematic intricately designed, Intricate digital detail; 16K Octane Render photorealism sharp focus clear contrast beautiful light shadows."

I also tried everything to draw an Anglais io ('dagpauwoog'), a peacock eyed  butterfly that is very common in the Netherlands, but apparently unknown to the AI. His Latin name didn't work either. The best I could conjure up is this <<<.

Another animal that proved very difficult was the garden dormouse - a rare mouse, distinguishable from the dormouse by its black mask. Asking for a 'garden dormouse'  becomes the same for the AI as asking for a 'garden + dormouse'. Because all I got were dormice in a garden, I  tried the Dutch (eikelmuis) and the Latin name (Eliomys quercinus) - see the result >>>.

"Eliomys quercinus, black-masked, iridescent highlights, aquarel by Jean Baptiste Monge, Hergé, Erin Hanson, Arthur Rackham, cinematic intricately designed, Intricate digital detail; 16K Octane Render photorealism sharp focus clear contrast beautiful light shadows."

Nonsense text

What I do more often is provide a nonsense text. 'Nonsense' in quotation marks, because the text often means something, but is not a tangible thing to depict. Often I try pop song titles plus their performer - and pop songs can have pretty vague titles. Especially in December, the most inspiring songs are played on the radio in the Netherlands because of the Top 2000 voted by Radio2 listeners.

This strange insect here was the result of "NPO radio2 top 2000 voting week, iridescent highlights, aquarel, by Jean Baptiste Monge, Hergé, Erin Hanson, Arthur Rackham, cinematic intricately designed, Intricate digital detail; 16K Octane Render photorealism sharp focus clear contrast beautiful light shadows."

Presumably Stable v1.5 couldn't do anything with the first part, and stuck to 'iridescent highlights', which this little creature is full of.

The animals before and after this originated from "The Rolling Stones paint it black, aquarel, painterly, granular dripping running, muted colors, iridescent highlights, by Jean Baptiste Monge, Hergé, Erin Hanson, Arthur Rackham, cinematic intricately designed, Intricate digital detail; 16K Octane Render photorealism sharp focus clear contrast beautiful light shadows." The atmosphere of the pop song becomes tangible here.

Fantastic animal

There are many well-known fantastic animals, from ancient ones like dragons, through just a century old like Cthulhu, to very young ones like gremlins and Pokémon. Both dragons and Cthulhu are firm favorites among people who generate images with AI - which makes sense since no one can say what they should really look like. With dragons I therefore allow myself a lot of freedom to supplement the picture, preferably with the help of pop songs.

"On Top Of The World Imagine Dragons, iridescent highlights, aquarel, by Jean Baptiste Monge, Hergé, Erin Hanson, Arthur Rackham, cinematic intricately designed, Intricate digital detail; 16K Octane Render photorealism sharp focus clear contrast beautiful light shadows."

Cthulhu was conceived in 1928 by H.P. Lovecraft and this has inspired many people to create stories, music and images. Cthulhu should be the size of a mountain, with features of octopus, dragon, and human with rudimentary wings. Notably, it is grotesque and terrifying.

What could be more fun than making it into a cute baby Cthulhu? <<<

Or a chibi Cthulhu figurine? >>>

I could go on and on, but let me stop here. The best thing is to get to work yourself and conjure up the most remarkable creatures from your computer.

Finally, some gremlins who are demolishing my husbands glasses. (It really wasn't me.)
